Maps privacy & terms

What happens when you type into the address field on the sign-in sheet, what the map on your order page shows while a delivery is on its way, and what to do if you would rather neither happened.

Where your keystrokes go

The address field offers suggestions as you type. Those keystrokes are sent directly from your browser to Google Maps, not to the concierge, so that Google can find matching places. Google also receives connection information such as your IP address. We do not see what you type there until you submit the form.

You do not have to use it

The plain address box under the suggestions always works. Type your address there and ignore the suggestions, and nothing is sent to Google at all.

Seeing your driver on the way

While your shopping is out for delivery, your order page can show your driver on a map with roughly how long he has left. Two things make that possible: the pin you put on your own door when you first saved your address, and your driver's phone, which reports where it is about every fifteen seconds from the moment he leaves the shops until he marks your delivery done. We ask Google to work out the driving time between the two, which means Google is told both positions.

Only your household sees it, and only while your own delivery is out. It is not a history: we keep the current position and nothing else, the previous one is overwritten each time a new one arrives, and the last one is deleted when your shopping reaches your door. There is no record afterwards of the route anyone drove.

If the map stops moving

A phone stops reporting when its screen locks, so the dot can stop while the driver is still very much on his way. The page says so when that happens rather than leaving a stale dot looking live, and the driver can switch the sharing off himself at any point — in which case you will see your delivery window and the stage it is at, as you always have, with no map. None of this affects the delivery itself.

Google's terms

Google Maps features are subject to the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.

What we keep

The address you submit is saved with your request so the concierge desk knows where you are and can tell you when deliveries reach your area. A suggestion does not confirm that we deliver to an address, and it does not confirm that you live anywhere: the desk decides what it can reach, and calls you.

Driver positions are the exception to that: they are not kept. See “Seeing your driver on the way” above.
